Benbrook

For approximately 11,000 years, the Benbrook area was occupied by herds of buffalo and four different Indian Tribes. What made the Benbrook area ideal to them still holds true today. The area is blessed with a plentiful water supply, being fed by the Clear Fork and Trinity River as well as Mary´s Creek. It made for good hunting grounds then, and now the neighborhoods that line the river are among the more peaceful.

Benbrook is one of Tarrant counties youngest cities, only becoming incorporated in the 1940´s. However, as a community, Benbrook has been around quite some time and is in fact one of the older communities in the county. The community stretches back to 1843 when family 107 of Peters' Colony settled along Mary´s Creek. Soon a post office was established and the area grew. Benbrook got its name from resident James M. Benbrook who successfully petitioned to get a railroad station placed.

Though not yet incorporated as a city, the Benbrook area continued to grow. In 1917 an airfield was put in, later called Benbrook airfield, where both American and Canadian pilots trained during World War I. In the 1930´s, the area became home to several important Texas figures including Elliot Roosevelt, son of President Roosevelt, the president of Fort Worth National Bank, and the head of the Texas Motor Truck Transport Company. Finally, on November 17, 1947, Benbrook became a city.

At the beginning of the 20^th century, Benbrook had approximately 33 citizens. Now the city boasts around 22,000 people, and many hundred businesses. The area includes Benbrook Lake which formed after the building of Benbrook Dam in the 1940´s.

Perhaps one of the most unique features about Benbrook is its commitment to keeping its citizens safe, and the community peaceful. Benbrook is one of the few cities in which the sales of alcohol is illegal, a law passed in 1949. In 1951, Benbrook´s citizens voted further that taverns were illegal. Overall crime in Benbrook is well below the state and national average. Truly, Benbrook is a wonderful community to live in.
